Transfer Requirements

General Education for Transfer and Pre-Professional Advising Guides

The following advising guides provide the lower division GE requirements or prerequisites for pre-professional programs. Students will also need to complete transfer admission and general education requirements for the university they plan to attend. For a complete list of majors, programs, and major preparation, please check ASSIST for additional CSU,  UC and some private independent campuses.

The information on these documents is subject to change without notice. Please review a current catalog of the university, the ASSIST website, and consult with a counselor for more information.

Cal-GETC  (California General Education Transfer Curriculum) This General Education Pattern is for students who began a California Community College (CCC) Fall 2025 or later, or those who have not maintained catalog rights and not eligible to use IGETC or CSUGE Breadth.  Students should meet with an academic counselor for additional details.  Cal-GETC will fulfill general education (GE) requirements for the California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) system.

IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum) is for students who started at a CCC prior to Fall 2025 and has maintained continuous attendance. This pattern is appropriate for students who intend to transfer to the UC or CSU system. Depending on your choice of UC or CSU and your major, other options are available: UC campus specific breadth, CSU lower division general education certification pattern, or CSU campus specific GE pattern. Students pursing majors (engineering, STEM, business at UCB, liberal studies) that require extensive lower division preparation or transferring to UCSD (Roosevelt and Revelle) may not find IGETC to be advantageous. Students should ascertain through their ECC counselor if IGETC is an appropriate transfer pattern.

CSU GE Breadth is for students who started at a CCC prior to Fall 2025 and is appropriate for students who intend to transfer to a CSU.

The Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T) is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. Students completing the AA-T/AS-T are given priority consideration for admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. With this degree, students may be given a GPA bump when applying to an impacted campus outside the local area or an impacted major that is deemed similar. Once admitted in a deemed similar degree program, students have the opportunity to complete a bachelor's degree with 60 semester units at the university.

In order to earn an AA-T/AS-T degree, students must complete:

  1. Completion of 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University.
  2. The Cal-GETC pattern (effective fall 2025, or Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or the California State University General Education - Breadth Requirements (if eligible through catalog rights and continuous attendance maintained).
  3. A minimum of 18 semester units in a major or area of emphasis, as determined by the community college district.
  4. A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
  5. A grade of “C” or better in all courses required for the major or area of emphasis.

Students who have completed an AA-T/AS-T will have a strong academic foundation in the field and will be prepared for upper division baccalaureate study at the university. The coursework will satisfy most of the lower-division requirements at many institutions within the California State University system. Students transferring to a UC, private, or out-of-state university should consult with an El Camino College counselor when planning to complete the degree since transfer requirements may be slightly different than those required for the AA-T/AS-T.

To view the AA-T or AS-T that is deemed similar at the CSU please review the following website: CSU Associate Degree for Transfer Major & Campus Search.
