Area High School Students to Attend Chevron Design Challenge at El Camino College

March 8, 2019 Torrance, CA

El Camino College will welcome area high school students to the 2019 Los Angeles South Bay Regional Chevron Design Challenge on Saturday, April 13. This daylong design competition offers students real-world experience in engineering, with final presentations scheduled for 3 p.m.

The Chevron Design Challenge is a one-day competition that gives engineering students the opportunity to use creativity and problem-solving skills. Project Lead The Way (PLTW) high school students from across the state, who either are currently taking or have taken PLTW’s Introduction to Engineering Design/Intro to Design class at El Camino College or their high schools, are invited to participate.

“El Camino College welcomes our future engineers to this event that demonstrates the importance of engineering design to tackle real-world problems with innovative solutions,” said El Camino College President Dena P. Maloney. “Opportunities like this allow students to apply what they have learned in the classroom and gain career experience.”

Working in teams of three, students will compete against other high school teams to address a problem relating to portable, renewable, and affordable energy. All students will build portfolios and then submit them to a panel of judges who will review them. Prizes will be awarded to the top five teams in each region; the top three teams from each region are invited to compete in the statewide competition in Bakersfield on May 4.

This competition supports the goal of increasing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) opportunities for students. For more information about the Chevron Design Challenge view the PLTW California website:, or call 310-660-3593, ext. 3520.
