El Camino College Theater Department to Present “Spring Awakening”
The El Camino College Theater Department will present the rock musical “Spring Awakening” throughout March, live and “in person” in the Campus Theatre. Performances are set for 8 p.m. March 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, and 26, and 3 p.m. March 13, 20, and 27.
Based on an 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, “Spring Awakening” is set in 19th century Germany and follows repressed and struggling teenagers who are discovering their sexuality in a society that believes ignorance is bliss. This show challenges our perceptions of art and asks us to reflect on how to do right by children and each subsequent generation of young people.
Director Daniel Nakawatase said the entire cast is looking forward to this live production; many of the actors haven't been on stage in nearly two years due to the pandemic. Nakawatase added that presenting “Spring Awakening” with a college cast presents a unique opportunity to tell this story in a more impactful way.
“Many of the actors are closer to the ages of these characters than some of the professional productions, which brings an immediacy and authenticity to the production that only young people can bring to ‘Spring Awakening,’” he said. “The result is something painfully beautiful and earnest as they journey through a narrative that begs the grown-ups of the world to listen to them.”
The production’s dance and musical components are led by choreographer Liz Hoefner Adamis and musical director Anthony Moreno.
