El Camino College to Host Statewide Historically Black College/University Transfer and Scholarship Celebration
2025 Ken Brown Scholarship Recipient Clay Grant is Morehouse College-bound
El Camino College is honored to announce the upcoming California Community Colleges (CCC) to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Transfer Guarantee Celebration and HBCU Caravan, to be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at the El Camino College campus. Parking is available in Lot C (accessible from Manhattan Beach Blvd.).
Since 2015, the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office has built and sustained strong transfer partnerships with HBCUs, creating guaranteed pathways for students to complete their bachelor’s degrees. Through this program, any CCC student may transfer to a partner HBCU with an approved Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) or with a minimum of 30 transferable units. Demonstrating the state’s commitment to this transfer initiative, students may also be eligible to receive Cal-HBCU Transfer Grant.
During the Caravan, partner HBCUs will engage with students directly, highlighting the unique academic, cultural, and community opportunities their campuses offer. This is a powerful opportunity for our students to learn more about transferring and thriving at an HBCU.
This year’s gathering holds special significance as it marks the 10th Anniversary of the CCC to HBCU Transfer Guarantee Program, a groundbreaking initiative that has expanded access, equity, and opportunity for California community college students seeking to continue their education at HBCUs nationwide. Over the past decade, the program has helped hundreds of students find their academic and cultural home at HBCUs, connecting them to a legacy of excellence, leadership, and vibrant campus life.
“Celebrating 10 years of the CCC to HBCU Transfer Guarantee Program is a tribute to the visionaries, trailblazers, and partners who have built and sustained this pathway,” expresses Dr. Brenda Thames, President and Superintendent of El Camino College. “We are proud to host this milestone event at El Camino College and to honor the collective efforts that ensure student success and opportunity remain at the forefront of higher education.”
In addition to the day’s celebrations, El Camino College is proud to announce the recipient of the 2025 Kenneth A. Brown Scholarship. This scholarship honors the legacy of Kenneth A. Brown, a distinguished graduate of Morehouse College, an HBCU in Atlanta, Georgia, and a dedicated champion for student access and equity in higher education.
The scholarship continues Mr. Brown’s vision by supporting El Camino College students who aspire to transfer and thrive at HBCUs. The 2025 award recipient, Clay Grant, has demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to community service. This recognition reflects the enduring impact of Mr. Brown’s legacy and the promise of future generations of scholars.
