El Camino College Welcomes 2023 Commencement Speaker

El Camino College welcomes Vera Jimenez as the 2023 commencement speaker. The accomplished journalist and meteorologist will address the Class of 2023 during the 76th Annual Commencement Ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m. Friday, June 9 in Murdock Stadium. Jimenez is known for her award-winning work as a KTLA 5 meteorologist, appearing with the television news team weeknights at 6 p.m., 6:30 p.m., 10 p.m., and 11 p.m.

“We are so pleased to welcome Vera Jimenez to our commencement celebration,” said El Camino College President Brenda Thames. “Her career achievements, her entrepreneurial spirit, and her connection with the community will inspire our students. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our students who have worked so hard to become El Camino graduates.”

Jimenez attended Santa Ana College and later California State University, Long Beach, where she graduated with honors in religious studies. It was during her time at Santa Ana College that she started in broadcasting. She interned at KIK-FM in Orange and then got a job producing traffic for Shadow Broadcasting. She landed a fill-in job doing traffic overnights at KFWB-AM, and gained experience at KNX-AM, where she was an airborne traffic reporter. She is originally from Mexico but was raised in Orange County, where most of her family still lives.

Jimenez has earned four Emmys, three Golden Mikes, and three Golden Pylons. Aside from her journalism career, Jimenez is passionate about volunteering and giving back to the community. She is a motivational speaker and leads people in entrepreneurship by speaking at organizations and events, and sharing her journey on social media.
