How do Online and Hybrid Classes Work?
Every class section in the Online Class Schedule will display a Class Type in the Location column.
The most common Class Types are: On Campus at El Camino College, Online, and Hybrid.
On Campus at El Camino College
Class sections with a location of "On Campus at El Camino College" have required on-campus meeting days/times as noted in the Meeting Information column.
On Campus classes typically meet:
- Two days a week for a 16-Week full semester class – usually Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday
- Four days a week for a 6- or 8-Week summer class
- Five days a week for a 5-week winter class
Online
Class sections with a location of "Online" do not have any required on-campus or online meeting days/times.
- Even though the Online Class Schedule displays "Times TBD" for Online classes, they will not have any required meeting days/times
- There may be optional opportunities to meet with your instructor online (example: office hours) or as a class
Online classes take place in Canvas.
- Registered students will see their Online classes in Canvas on the Start Date of the class (or earlier if the instructor publishes the class before that date)
Online classes are not self-paced. There will be a pace to the class with which students will be expected to keep up — as with an on-campus class.
- Lectures will be pre-recorded
- Students are expected to watch the assigned videos, complete the assigned reading, participate in discussion boards, and submit assignments by the dates outlined in the syllabus
- Assignments are often due by 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time) on the deadline date
- If there is a quiz or test held on a specific date, students typically have the entire 24-hour period to start and complete the quiz/test
As with any class, make sure to read and understand the expectations as stated in the syllabus. Reviewing the syllabus is often the first module for an Online class.
Hybrid
Class sections with a location of "Hybrid" typically meet on-campus for half of the number of days per week as a class that is "On Campus at El Camino College," with the rest of the class Online (as above).
- When using the Online Class Schedule, the required on-campus meeting days/times and rooms will be stated in the Meeting Information column
- The rest of the class will be online in Canvas
Live Online
Class sections with a location of "Live Online" have required online (synchronous) meeting days/times as noted in the Meeting Information column.
- El Camino College offers very few Live Online classes – only 10 total for Spring Semester 2026 (vs. 700+ Online classes)
