CalWORKs, created in 1997 through AB 1542, provides cash aid and essential basic needs support to low‑income families. The program equips single and two‑parent households receiving TANF with the tools needed to strengthen their path to independence through education, job training, and employment opportunities.

Families in approved work activities may also receive child care, transportation assistance, work‑related expense support, and counseling. Adults have a five‑year time limit, while eligible children may continue receiving aid through the Safety Net program.

CalWORKs is committed to offering a safe, welcoming space where parenting students feel supported and empowered as they pursue their academic and career goals.

Without a doubt, the CalWORKs program has been the key to my success. Without the support of the many different staff members as well as the financial resources, I would not have had the ability to believe my dream could become a reality. I am profoundly grateful for the program to fulfill my life-long dream and serve others.”
