Lavender Celebration

6:00 - 8:00PM

EAST DINING ROOM

Lavender Celebration is an annual ceremony conducted on numerous campuses to honor lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, nonbinary, intersex, queer, asexual/aromantic, and ally students to acknowledge their achievements and contributions to the college they attend. Lavender Celebration was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a Jewish Lesbian, who was denied the opportunity to attend the graduations of her biological children because of her sexual orientation. It was through this experience that she came to understand the pain felt by her students. Encouraged by the Dean of Students at the University of Michigan, Dr. Sanlo designed the first Lavender Celebration Ceremony in 1995. The first Lavender Celebration began at the University of Michigan in 1995, with three graduates. By 2001, there were over 45 Lavender Celebration Ceremonies at Colleges and Universities nationwide. Graduating students, including undergraduates and graduates, are invited to take part in the celebration, which typically occurs each year the week prior to college wide commencement events.  Each student will receive an LGBTQIA+ sash and rainbow tassel to be worn at the main graduation ceremony.

Distinguished Speaker Series-Dr. Eric Cervini

1:15PM

Marsee Auditorium

Dr. Eric Cervini is an award-winning author, producer, and historian of LGBTQ+ politics. His first book, The Deviant's War: The Homosexual vs. the United States of America, was a New York Times bestseller and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. It also won the Publishing Triangle's Randy Shilts Award for Gay Nonfiction, The New York Times Editors' Choice, and the "Best Read of 2020" at the Queerties.

In this talk, Dr. Eric Cervini expertly explains the cultural crossroads that America is currently facing in the timeless battle for gay rights. Based on firsthand accounts, recently declassified FBI records, and roughly 40,000 personal documents, Cervini uncovers the secret history of gay activism that began a generation before Stonewall. From public battles with Congress and FBI informants to murder and betrayal, Cervini chronicles the events that have led us to this exact moment. This event is co-sponsored by the ECC Center For The Arts.

Jotería Game Night-A Fun Twist on Lotería

5:00-7:00 PM

Social Justice Center (Com-204)

Jotería is a game based on the traditional Mexican game Lotería, but it celebrates and reflects the experiences of LGBTQIA+ and queer people in Mexico. Jotería will be hosted by Chi Chi Lapinga, a Mexican-American Trans-Agender entertainer, fashionista, community builder and advocate for gender and sexually diverse people in Los Angeles and beyond.  Don't forget to bring your $1 and $5 bills to tip!

ECC Pride Festival-Unity Through Diversity

11:00AM - 2:00 PM

Student Services Plaza

Head outdoors for a fun-filled day of food, music, and entertainment brought to you by the Gender Sexuality & Alliance (GSA) Club.

On June 28, 1970, on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, the first Pride marches and festivals were held in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Thousands of LGBTQIA+ people gathered to commemorate Stonewall and demonstrate for equal rights.  The events of Stonewall and the liberation movements that followed were a direct result of prior decades of LGBTQIA+ activism and organizing.  We are excited to bring back our own Pride Festival, highlighting community partners and the various student led clubs and departments on campus.
