In June 2020, the Chancellor’s Office launched the California Community Colleges "Call
to Action" to take action against structural racism in our institutions and in our
communities (Vision in Action No. 40). El Camino College's Superintendent at the time,
President Dena Maloney, formed an Advisory Committee on Race and Equity, with representation
from staff, students and faculty, to advise her on strategies to support an inclusive
and welcoming campus climate for all. This Committee created subcommittees based
on five areas of focus for 2020-21, one of which was "Student Experiences." After
gathering data, one of the recommendations from the "Student Experiences" Committee
was to establish a Social Justice Center on campus which would serve as a safe space
for students with shared life experiences to feel a sense of belonging and support.
In 2021, the VP of Student Services and Student Equity & Achievement allocated resources
and staff to bring the Social Justice Center to life.
