About the RWS

In alignment with El Camino College’s vision and goals, the Reading and Writing Studio believes that tutoring is equity in action. We recognize that all people come to the writing center from different backgrounds, including language, identity, and learning style to express their unique voices. The Reading and Writing Studio works with students to refine and clarify their ideas, produce successful writing, and improve their academic confidence. We strive to create better writers, not just better writing, by encouraging students to use their voices to make significant contributions and achieve academic and personal growth.

We affirm the sanctity of human voices in the writing process. While artificial intelligence (AI) tools may serve as useful aids for brainstorming, editing, or surface-level language support, they cannot substitute for authentic human communication or the intellectual growth that emerges through the act of writing. Our tutoring practice centers student voice, agency, and learning above all else. We recognize that generative AI systems may reflect embedded biases and may produce inaccurate or fabricated information. For this reason, we approach AI as a limited tool that requires critical, ethical, and transparent use.

We are committed to maintaining a supportive environment in which students can openly discuss their use of AI in the writing process without fear of judgment. Tutors will engage students in thoughtful conversations about the judicious and responsible use of technological tools, including AI, in ways that support learning rather than replace it. Because we value dialogue-driven learning and the interpersonal dimensions of writing development, we maintain that students benefit most from working collaboratively with human tutors. Our tutors will honor individual instructors’ AI policies while consistently prioritizing the development of original thought, rhetorical awareness, and authentic student voice
