The Reading and Writing Studio offers drop-in tutoring appointments to all enrolled ECC students both in-person and online. Students can check in to the online tutoring queue here, or, for in-person tutoring, students should check in with our front desk receptionists in Humanities-122.
Please note, the RWS only offers tutoring for reading and writing assignments. For subject-specific tutoring, visit the El Camino Tutoring Hub.
English C1000 with 0100S sections attached are just like standalone C1000 classes, but they have an additional two-hour lab attached to give students extra writing support. This support comes from both the instructor and an embedded tutor. As opposed to drop-in tutoring, embbedded tutoring allows our tutors to familiarize themselves with specific course ontent to better guide you through your assignments. If you are enrolled in an ENGL C1000/01000S course, check your Canvas or your syllabus to see who your assigned embedded tutor is.

If you’ve never worked with a tutor before, here’s what to expect.
Ideally, you should attend your tutoring session with your draft in progress, the assignment sheet and/or parameters given to you by your professor, and some specific questions for your tutor about how we can help you.
That said, if you have less than this, we’ll work hard to make the most of our time together – if you have nothing, we’ll help you brainstorm and get started. The key is to have some ideas about what you’d like to accomplish in your session.
The more time you allow between your tutoring session and the assignment’s due date, the more we can help you refine your work, and the more valuable your session will be.
As much as possible, try to plan ahead so that you can really think about your tutor’s advice, make changes based on it, and maybe even come back for another session!
Tutors aren’t miracle workers, and this isn’t Hogwarts. A tutor’s job is to help you learn and, as a result, be more independent, not to wave their magic wands and just “fix” things.
Plan to work with your tutor for 20-30 minutes on one or two specific aspects of your essay. If you don't know what you want to work on, your tutor can provide some options.
Come to your tutoring session with an open mind. Our tutors love helping students bring their ideas to life, and we want you to feel just as excited about your own ideas. However, we understand that writing can often bring anxiety. If that's the case, and you're struggling to think positively about your writing, let your tutor know! We know all types of tips and tricks to work through writing anxiety.
