Course Restrictions & Other Limitations

A few El Camino College courses are restricted for all K-12 students. Some courses have a Prerequisite or Enrollment Limitation which may also restrict enrollment.

There are separate Steps for Grades K-8 to be eligible for Dual Enrollment — including obtaining approval from an El Camino College dean.

Course Restrictions

Dual Enrollment is not permitted in the following courses:

  • Intercollegiate Sports Teams (except for Off-Season Training with dean's approval)
  • Boxing, Self-Defense, and Martial Arts courses
  • Life Drawing courses
  • Any PE Activity course during summer or winter terms

Dean's approval is required to dual enroll in any Physical Education Activity course. If you select a PE course in DualEnroll, it will be automatically routed to the Dean of Kinesiology, Athletics, and Public Safety for approval.

Prerequisites & Equivalencies

Some courses have a prerequisite, a condition which must be met before a student can register.

Below is a list of common prerequisites to keep in mind when selecting courses — along with equivalencies relevant to K-12 students.

Clearing a prerequisite is Step 4 of the Steps for Dual Enrollment.

ENGL C1000 (formerly ENGL 1A) has a prerequisite of “Placement as determined by the college’s multiple measures assessment process.”

  • English placement requires completion of 3 years of high school English with a GPA of 2.60 or greater. This means ENGL C1000 is commonly taken by Grade 12 Seniors only.

ENGL C1001 and C1002 both have a prerequisite of "ENGL C1000 or equivalent."

  • This is equivalent to a score of 3, 4, or 5 on the AP English Language or Literature Exam

All MATH and STAT courses have a prerequisite.

NOTE: El Camino College does not offer any courses equivalent to Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, or Algebra 2.

High school transcripts can be used to clear a prerequisite up to MATH 190.

  • MATH 60 has a prerequisite equivalent to Algebra 1 with a grade of C or better
  • MATH 170 has a prerequisite equivalent to Algebra 2 with a grade of C or better
  • MATH 180 has a prerequisite equivalent to Trigonometry with a grade of C or better
  • MATH 190 has a prerequisite equivalent to Precalculus with a grade of C or better
  • STAT C1000 has a prerequisite equivalent to Algebra 2 with a grade of C or better

MATH 191 and above require AP Exam Scores or other college transcripts.

  • MATH 191 and 210 have a prerequisite equivalent to a score of 4 or 5 on AP Calculus AB Exam or Score of 3 on AP Calculus BC Exam
  • MATH 220 has a prerequisite equivalent to a score of 4 or 5 on AP Calculus BC Exam

All CHEM courses have a prerequisite.

  • CHEM 20 has a prerequisite equivalent to Algebra 1 with a grade of C or better
  • CHEM 4 has a prerequisite equivalent to Algebra 2 with a grade of C or better

  • ECON C2001 and C2002 have a prerequisite equivalent to Algebra 1 with a grade of C or better

  • PHYS 2A has a prerequisite equivalent to Trigonometry with a grade of C or better

Chinese 1, French 1, German 1, Italian 1, Japanese 1, Spanish 1, and American Sign Language 111 are each comparable to two years of a high school language class.

Each subsequent course (2, 3, etc.) is comparable to one year of a high school class.

For example:

  • SPAN 1 is comparable to two years of high school Spanish
  • The prerequisite for SPAN 2 is comparable to two years of high school Spanish with a grade of C or better
  • The prerequisite for SPAN 3 is comparable to three years of high school Spanish with a grade of C or better
  • The prerequisite for SPAN 4 is comparable to four years of high school Spanish with a grade of C or better

A complete list of courses with a prerequisite can be found in the El Camino College Catalog:

Enrollment Limitations

Below is a list of enrollment limitations that are important for Dual Enrollment students to understand before choosing courses.

  • AJ 49, AJ 150, and AJ 155 have strict enrollment limitations, not applicable for minors

  • Students must be at least 18 years of age by the halfway mark of the class to participate in FTEC 144 Emergency Medical Technician
  • FTEC 15 Fire Academy has many prerequisites
  • FTEC 130-139 require admission to Paramedical Technician Program

  • NURS 143 has many prerequisites
  • All other Nursing courses have enrollment limitation of admission to the Nursing Program

  • RTEC A has prerequisite of “Proficient in pre-algebra skills and eligibility for English 1A”
  • All other RTEC courses have enrollment limitation of admission to the Radiologic Technology Program

  • RC-170, 172, and 174 only
  • All other RC courses have enrollment limitation of admission to the Respiratory Care Program

A complete list of courses with an enrollment limitation can be found in the El Camino College Catalog:

Steps for Grades K-8

Students in Grades K-8 do not use DualEnroll — and instead must complete the steps below to be eligible for Dual Enrollment. Dean's approval is determined on a case-by-case basis.

Important! FERPA applies to all El Camino College students (including K-12 special admit students) regardless of age.

K-12 students apply for admission using CCCApply. This creates your El Camino College student account.

  • If you already have an El Camino College student account and have not missed consecutive fall and spring semesters since the term for which you applied, proceed to Step 3.
  • Students need to Apply for Admission Again if they do not enroll in classes for consecutive fall and spring terms — and also to attend El Camino College after high school.

Important Notes!

Please read before clicking the link to apply.

  • Applying is a two-part process: first to Create an Account, and then to Start a New Application. Take your time and enter all identifying information accurately.
  • Do not use your school email address. Doing so may lead to issues with verification or receiving your Welcome Email. Use a personal email address which you can access now and after high school.
  • Select the earliest term you wish to start taking classes. For example: students who select Fall Semester 2026 will be eligible for Fall 2026 and beyond, but will not be eligible for Summer 2026.
  • Select a College Enrollment Status of "enrolling in high school (or lower grade) and college at the same time." Otherwise you will not be able to access DualEnroll.

Reminder! To attend El Camino College after high school, students need to apply for admission again as a first-time college student. See also: What happens after I graduate from high school?

Below are tutorials to make sure students have successfully applied to El Camino College, receive their Welcome Email, can sign into MyECC — and more!

Welcome Email

After you submit an application for admission, you will receive a few different emails right away — one of which will contain your 8-digit Confirmation Number.

Within 1-3 business days, you will be sent your Welcome Email with important information about your El Camino student account.

Sign into MyECC

The first time you sign into MyECC, you will prompted to create a new secure password.

Multi-Factor Authentication

Required security feature! Follow these steps if you see "Let's keep your account secure" when signing into MyECC.

Update your Account

In case you need to update or correct the information on your El Camino student account.

K-8 students must submit a completed Dual Enrollment Form for each term they wish to take classes.

  • Forms need to be signed by the student, a parent/guardian, a principal or counselor at the student's school, and an El Camino College dean. Signatures cannot be typed!
  • Forms must include the Course #1, Course #2 (etc.) for which the student is approved to register. Approved courses for one term do not carry over to future terms.
  • Once submitted, forms cannot be edited and re-submitted. Instead, download and complete a new blank form (with all new signatures) to be approved for new courses or terms.
